Representatives of the 193 member states of ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), including Romania, are present at the 40th session of the ICAO General Assembly, which takes place in Montreal, Canada, on September 24 - October 4, 2019, to establish the global policy of the Organization for the next 3 years. The International Civil Aviation Organization is a United Nations agency that codifies the principles and techniques of international air navigation, and is responsible for planning and developing international air transport to ensure increased aviation safety. ICAO was established following the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation in Chicago on December 7, 1944. The ICAO General Assembly is the sovereign organ of the Organization, meets at least every three years and is convened by the governing body of ICAO, Council.
ICAO Member States have on the agenda of the General Assembly the development of policies, implementation of activities and long-term planning of the Organization's activity in global air traffic on air navigation, flight safety, aviation security, facilitation, economy and regulation of air transport, international air law, protection environment, technical cooperation, technical assistance, training of aviation personnel, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of ICAO.
The Assembly also discusses administrative issues, as well as the election of a new Council, the highest permanent governing body of ICAO, for the period 2020-2022.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation, adopted in Chicago on December 7, 1944.
