Subject: Egypt Sinai Peninsula Airspace
Ref. Publications: NOTAMs of the competent Flight Information Region (FIR): Cairo (HECC).
Applicability: National Aviation Authorities and aircraft operators.
Description: Due to ongoing insurgent activity, operators of civil aircraft should be aware of the risk to flight operations safety in the Northern Sinai Governorate of Egypt deriving from possible use of small arms fire, rocket-propelled grenades, mortars and anti-aircraft fire, including shoulder-fired man-portable air defence systems (MANPADS). The threat is considered to represent a significant risk to aviation overflying this area at or below FL260.
The Agency draws the aviation community’s attention to any further information that may indicate the existence of serious risks to the safety of international civil flights.
Flight Traffic Data: average daily traffic from the European region: 340 overflights on Sinai peninsula.
Recommendation(s): The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) recommends all operators to take any available information into account in their risk assessments and routeing decisions if planning to fly into, out of, within or over the Northern Sinai Governorate of Egypt and to monitor all relevant information, including NOTAMs.
National Aviation Authorities and aircraft operators are recommended to share with EASA any additional relevant information that they become aware of while accomplishing their risk assessments.
National Aviation Authorities should ensure that operators under their oversight are aware of such information.
